Hello!
I didn't assign any specific homework for today, but I did talk to the students about some up-coming assignments: United States of Food and Periodic Table of Elements. I have attached the sheets to this email for you to inspect, assist, keep on file, etc. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Mr. McElroy

Periodic Table of Elements
March, 2012
The class will research three (3) elements from the periodic table. Each student will research the element which is his/her student number, his/her number + 34, his/her number plus 68.
For each element, students must:
1. write the element as it appears on the table (on a rectangle I will supply)
2. draw a picture of the atom including: protons, neutrons, and electrons (on a paper I will supply)
3. research its properties, including: reactivity, stability, what compounds it is in, value, importance and interesting facts (on paper I will supply)
Valuable resource: chemicalelements.com
Due March 21st

The United States of Food
March, 2012
A popular 5th Grade tradition at Helmers has been for students to research food that comes from specific states and present it at our open house (March 29th, this year). Please have a family discussion to come up with a food or dish that has a connection with a state (or region of a state) that ties in with your family history (or just something you are fond of). The student is responsible for filling out a card which describes the dish/food, it's tradition/importance to the state/area, as well as your family connection. (It's OK if your family "just likes it.") Students are also responsible for including a list of ingredients so people can sample things knowing what to expect. Purchasing prepared item is A-OK, too. If you choose to make something, please concentrate on strict adherence to hygienic culinary practices.
Please submit three possible states and dishes. I will determine which will be yours to bring to Open House. Try to choose from a few different regions of the United States, so we don't have (much) overlap. Hint: if someone wants to bring a pineapple from Hawaii and another family wants to bring a pineapple upside-down cake, it'll be easy to choose which dish represents Hawaii (-the cake, of course!)
It is your responsibility to bring whatever is needed to serve the item -(small) paper plates, toothpicks, forks, etc. Please bring the dish toward the beginning of the Open House (time to be announced).
Thanks,
Mr. McElroy
